INDIGO - JEAN-MARC FOLTZ & STÉPHAN OLIVA

After an album devoted to Gershwin in 2016, Jean-Marc Foltz and Stéphan Oliva are today celebrating the twentieth anniversary of their duo by painting the portrait of another eminent figure dear to them: Duke Ellington.

Through a suite of selected pieces, the two accomplices evoke the world of this prodigious composer and orchestrator, whose color palette is reflected here with tenderness in the expression of the timbres of the clarinet and the piano.

Referring in turn to the poetry of the most introspective of his compositions, to the contrapuntal lines of force behind the magnificence of his arrangements, to his penchant for the suite and medley, to the emblematic personalities that created the soul of his orchestra, as well as to the cinema that regularly projected Ellington from the stage to the silver screen between 1929 and 1972, this kaleidoscopic work brings back to life an essential page of the history of jazz.

With, by way of a libretto, a sumptuous photographic documentary to complete this homage, here is a new album by Jean-Marc Foltz and Stéphan Oliva that draws the listener into an intimacy, that we listen to as if we were turning the pages of a family photo album, and invites the listener to savor this unique Ellingtonian ambience… this mood Indigo.
